(This is a guest post by our own Michelle Johnson, Essential Oils Barista. Enjoy!)
While we all hope this Thanksgiving will be that picture-perfect Hallmark family gathering we see in films, the reality is sometimes quite different. Energies may run high as you make sure everything is just so before guests arrive. And then personalities and perspectives may mix to create a volatile cocktail of emotional energy at the dinner table.
When celebrating Thanksgiving, we may therefore feel pressure not only to host the perfect holiday, but also to navigate and manage family dynamics that accompany get-togethers.
Essential Oil Solutions to Holiday Stress
At the Crystal Elixir Studio, we offer customized holistic solutions to ease your stress naturally and keep you vibing high during the holiday season.
And while you can’t control how everyone else behaves, we recommend that you have a few essential oils handy to keep you calm, cool, and collected, in the event things don’t go quite according to plan.
dōTERRA’s® Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil is versatile, a must-have for experts and new oil users alike. For centuries, lavender has been used for its calming properties. Just smelling the floral aroma evokes feelings of relaxation and tranquility.
Gearing up for a difficult conversation or just trying to stand in your power with your relatives? Lavender is also the oil of communication. If you’re feeling insecure or uneasy, anticipating a particular conversation this holiday season, rub a drop or two over your throat, take a deep breath, and confidently speak your truth.
(Practical Magic Tip: Keep a bottle of lavender essential oil in the kitchen while cooking. In the event of a burn, simply apply a few drops over the affected area for quick relief.)
dōTERRA’s Serenity® Essential Oil
The warm, floral fragrance of dōTERRA’s Serenity immediately leads the body and mind to exhale, easing any tension and calming the senses and emotions. Imagine a stroll on a sunny day in a beautiful fragrant garden. That’s Serenity! It blends the following essences:
- Ho Wood
- Ylang Ylang
- Roman Chamomile
- Vanilla Bean Absolute
- Hawaiian Sandalwood
dōTERRA’s Balance® Essential Oil
And the fresh, woody fragrance of dōTERRA’s Balance blend is our go-to oil when we need to feel grounded. Balance promotes whole-body relaxation, eases anxiety, and evokes tranquility and calm. It contains the following essences:
- Ho Wood
- Blue Tansy
- Blue Chamomile
Alone, Balance and Serenity are powerful oils, but when combined, they are a powerful tool to have on hand during the holidays.
(Practical Magic Tip: Most diffusers have automatic settings that allow you to select how long they operate so that you can just set it and forget it.)
How to Apply Essential Oils
To create a calm, welcoming environment for you and your guests this holiday, do as follows.
With a Diffuser
Combine 3-5 drops each of dōTERRA’s Serenity and Balance—or 5-7 drops of lavender—in your favorite diffuser. Keep the diffuser running in the entry or living room to create a peaceful atmosphere as your guests settle.
Without a Diffuser
Try this when you start to feel anxious.
- Place 1-2 drops of lavender — or a drop or two each of Serenity and Balance — in the palms of your hands, and rub them together.
- Cup your hands in front of your nose and take a few deep, cleansing breaths. We call this a “spiritual bong” for the hit of calm and ease it immediately imparts.
Remember, one of the best things about using essential oils aromatically is that, unlike medication, you don’t have to wait 4 to 6 hours for your next dose. You can take a quick break from Uncle Vito’s political rant or Aunt Isabel’s gossiping to tip a few drops of oil into your palms. Repeat as often as needed!
