(The following is another great guest post from our Essential Oils Barista, Michelle Johnson, in a special February series.)
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and love is in the air. In fact, you’ve probably seen Valentine’s Day merchandise on store shelves since New Year’s Day. The commercial focus of this holiday celebrates relationships with a significant other, but don’t overlook the most important relationship you have—your relationship with yourself. How you feel about and treat yourself communicates to others how you expect to be treated.
We recommend the following three essential oils for self-love, self-confidence, and mindfulness of self-value.
This is one of our favorite essential oils for self-love! Its light, refreshing citrus aroma always brings a smile to our faces and helps us find that silver lining in the darkest clouds. Traditionally used to alleviate feelings of melancholy and depression, the smell of Bergamot can bring calm to stressful situations and may even alleviate feelings of anxiety.
More importantly, Bergamot is the oil of self-acceptance and self-love. It reminds us that we are enough—just as we are—and dispels feelings of inadequacy and self-judgment. Her cleansing energy can help us repair a limiting belief system and replace it with a more hopeful story so we can move confidently in the direction of our dreams.
How to Use Bergamot
Apply Bergamot to pulse points topically, or preferably add a few drops in the diffuser before journaling or meditating to inspire optimism and self-confidence.
Like all citrus oils, Bergamot may cause photosensitivity. So, avoid using it topically for up to 72 hours before spending extended time in the sun.
Forgive is one of dōTERRA’s most brilliant concoctions in their Emotional Aromatherapy Collection. This oil blends:
- Juniper Berry
- Nootka Tree
Its earthy, grounding fragrance helps release feelings of hurt, anger, and judgment, opening the path to forgiveness and acceptance.
We often think of forgiveness in terms of granting it to others. But a big part of self-love is extending that same grace to ourselves. As difficult as it may be, letting go of regret and all the “woulda, shoulda, coulda’s” from the past is key to true happiness. As Louise Hay said, “I forgive myself and set myself free.”
Therefore, use Forgive when self-criticism and self-blame rear their ugly heads and bring your energy down.
How To Use Forgive
Since this is a very powerful blend, a couple drops in the diffuser is sufficient.
Another Crystal Elixir favorite, lavender is the oil of calm and communication. It’s one of the most versatile oils around and a must-have in any self-love toolbox! Lavender calms anxiety around risking authentic self-expression and of being truly seen and heard. It also inspires us to explore our emotions and encourages us to confidently communicate our deepest fears and desires with ourselves and others. It is through self-expression that we open ourselves to truly experience acceptance and unconditional love. It’s one of the best essential oils for self-love.
How to Use Lavender
- To calm insecurities, add several drops of lavender oil to your favorite diffuser, inhale directly from the bottle, or apply to pulse points.
- When you have difficulty expressing yourself to others verbally, apply a drop or two to your throat and over your heart.
Practical Magic Tips
- Start diffusing lavender oil in your bedroom 20 minutes before going to bed for a relaxing night’s sleep.
- For a little self-care and to calm an overactive mind, add several drops of Lavender to a warm bath and soak.
Whether you’re single or coupled, take some time this Valentine’s Day to celebrate amazing YOU! From essential oils for self-love to candles and crystals, the Crystal Elixir Studio has everything you need to show yourself a little love and appreciation.
