(This is a guest post by our pendulum expert, Barbara G. Enjoy!)
At first glance, the pendulum is a simple object: a small weight suspended at the end of a fine chain or string. Any weight will do—crystals, keys, charms or pendants. But it’s actually an ancient divination tool that originated over 5,000 years ago in Asia, where people commonly used it to find water, lost objects, and even missing people.
The user holds the pendulum in one hand to intensify sensitivity to energy—like an antenna—and communicate with his or her spirit guide. When the energy has amplified, it causes the pendulum to move. This movement is harnessed for divination. In this article, we’ll show you how to choose and use your pendulum for the best possible results.
Selecting Your Pendulum
The Crystal Elixir Studio sells a variety of pendulums, including crystal, metal, and beaded. Each pendulum is a very personal tool. The key is to select an attractive pendulum to which you feel drawn. If you’re selecting one in person, take the chain in your hand, hold the pendulum out from you and watch for it to move. More movement means a greater connection to you. As a rule of thumb, clear quartz or copper are particularly conductive, and make powerfully accurate pendulums.
If you’re purchasing your pendulum online, go with your instincts—which crystals or metals attract you the most? Which design makes you feel “connected” inside your soul? Go with that one.
Preparing Your New Pendulum
A tool like the tarot deck, the pendulum should be treated with reverence and respect. Prior to first usage, consecrate it to make it your own. Cleanse it from any prior influences or energies by either submerging it in salt water or passing it through the smoke of burning sage.
Learn Your Pendulum’s “Language”
Next, you’ll need to learn the pendulum’s “language” and means of directional communication. In the same hand that you would use to write, hold the end of the chain between your thumb and index finger. While seated, rest your elbow on the table, letting the weight of the pendulum hang approximately an inch above the table. (Placing your elbow on the table allows the pendulum to swing freely on its own, rather than to move through any unintentional finger manipulation.)
Now think: “What is ‘yes’?” The pendulum will swing on its own. Note which direction. Is the swing vertical? Horizontal? Clockwise? Then, think “What is ‘no’?” Note which direction the pendulum swings. It’s also good to ask: “What is ‘I can’t tell you’?” for those questions that Spirit does not wish to answer at this moment in time.
How to Use Your Pendulum
Perform a protective ritual before each pendulum session to ensure that only positive spirits are allowed to communicate with you through the pendulum. Centering yourself at the table, pendulum in hand, call upon the angels, your ancestors, or your guides to create a clear, protected space, where only positive energies have permission to speak. At the Crystal Elixir Studio, we also like to set up candles and crystals around the table. This helps magnify and focus the energy and your connection.
Now you’re ready to ask questions of Spirit and your guides. Open your session by explaining what you want to accomplish and what information you’re seeking. Then, ask questions and watch the pendulum. Make sure to phrase your questions so that they can be answered by “yes” or “no.”
Examples of possible questions include:
- Will I get a promotion?
- Is this a good opportunity for me?
- Should I go on the trip?
- Is my lost item in the house?
- Is this my soul mate?
Note that if it swings in the “I can’t tell you” direction, perhaps the question asked isn’t clear and should be rephrased. It’s also possible that there is no yes or no answer to the question, or that, at this moment, it would not be in your best interests to know the answer.
After you have become adept at yes/no questions, vary how you ask questions. Be creative and have fun with it! Put down a picture or a calendar to ask about people or dates. Pendulum over nutritional supplements to determine whether they would be good to take. Determine the gender of an unborn baby. Add a letterboard with the alphabet to the mix so you can ask your guide more complex questions. The more often you use it, the easier it becomes, and the stronger your connection to Spirit.
How to End a Divination Session
Always make sure to close out your session by thanking your guides for the advice and communication bestowed on you. And carefully store your pendulum in a safe place for the next time you connect.
